William Y. Shaw))

Not waiting for the autumn wind to start blowing,
The baby swallow eventually flies away,
Leaving here a whole house of emptiness
Filled up with my loss.

Who would like to come and pick it up?

Why? The emptiness,
This loss, has suddenly filled my heart in such a rush.

Looking at the lone beam where the empty nest lies,
I try to figure out,
When will come its time of return,
That is so far away!

William Y. Shaw wrote the original poem in Chinese at 9 o’clock in the morning on July 17, 1953, in the campus of the Naval Academy of the Republic of China in Tsoying, Taiwan, This is its literal translation by the author on October 11, 2007 in La Jolla, California, USA.

(Note 2)

Image (About writing)

An image is the thoughts we feel,
Not the objects we see.
To write is to change what we see
Into an image that
Even a blind person can see.

Note 2: On October 12, 2007 in a Community College, English writing class in San Diego, California, we were instructed to write what ever we “see” around us. These topics stimulated my thoughts, and these five lines in English were instantly recorded in my notebook. I translated this poem, “Image” later into Chinese “映像”.

Yearning is the parting
That tightens the strings of my heart.
It stirs up the dreamy memories
That always awake me, startled and confused.
(Let me ….)
With hope as musical notes,
Prayer as my pledges,
Let me quietly compose my song.
Yearning sincerely for you,
Hoping flowers blossom as Spring comes near,
Praying you will return here when Winter is over,
I will whisper my heartfelt wishes to you in song
When you return to my side again.
